Annoying Fashion Trend

February 23, 2009

I am not sure about the rest of Ireland, but in Cork there is a annoying fashion trend around at the moment. It involves the tucking your jeans or trackies (that is tracksuit pants) into your socks when out and about among young lads and especially ones that look shifty.

What is with this trend? It looks terrible! Especially when your sock goes halfway up your shin in some cases! So why is this a trend? Why oh god why?

I have a few theories to why lads are walking around like this. Theory One they have diarrhoea. Theory Two they forgot to un-tuck after they got off their bike. Theory Three some gang somewhere started it and they think its cool to do the same. For some reason unless there is some new infection going around Cork I doubt its theory one. Theory two is also unlikely as there isn’t that many bikes in Cork and certainly no push bike gangs. So I think it is theory three.

Why do these gang symbols some how migrate into street fashion? These lads are doing themselves no favours in dressing like that. They wonder why they get looks in shops and wonder why they get followed by security. Why if a gang does something it becomes fashionable? Fashion should be about being you, standing out not being part of the crowd! I wonder how long this trend will last? Hopefuly not long.

But isn’t it all about the statement? The freedom to wear what you like – though it just so happens to be almost exactly what your friends are wearing and how they’re doing so.

The trousers tucked into the socks is handy – stops all the stuff you’re ‘lifting escaping out the legs when running from the security guards… or so I’ve heard.

LOL to your theory! that could be another one.

As for what you say about fashion freedoms, to me fashion should be setting your own style. Even if it is a variation of a friends. But one that is associated with Gangs and stuff should be avoided me thinks!

I noticed it a while back in Dublin (around May of last year.

I think its started as a poor fashion trend.
    Or converse taking off…
    Or pockets

    Poor…
The really cheap trackies have elasticated ankles. Tucking the ankles in the socks hides this.
Someone “influential” but poor started, and it took off.
Ironically, it makes someone look like they are wearing the primary school version of a school uniform tracksuit. Maybe someone didn’t want to grow up.

    Converse…
While the iconic shoes/runners have a distinctive toe, many knockoffs have copied this. Most pants cover up the “star” logo on the ankle. By tucking your legs in to the top of the shoe, you show it off. The “high tops” are around the sock top length… and it took off as a trend in its own right.

    and finally, pockets
While those trackies are really comfortable, put anything in the pockets, and the pants start to flow towards the ankles. By tucking belongings in the socks, your pants stay up. Of course this is a long shot, but possible. Also it does leave the options of passing a “pat down”.
